Good tips for those aspiring metal smiths. Alas I do not have any metal working facilities so will be content with the striker I have.

That is a problem, though I have seen forging done with a gas axe as a heat source and a sledge hammer head as a anvil, and a simple heavy hammer as the forging hammer. It can be done with minimal tools and equipment.
