What makes a good ground mat?

For a really lightweight mat that will provide some insulation, you could try a foil car windscreen sun shade (the type with the bubble wrap sandwiched between layers of foil, not just the plain foil sheet). A number of YouTubers have used these as a minimalist ground cover (have a look at some videos by Intenseagler for example) though they would have limitations for really cold weather camping.

I've tried a few and for cheap and light the old closed cell foam mats are the go.

I've tried a few self inflaters but they always get punctured for me. I am a bit hard on gear and while the self inflaters are a bit more comfortable they're too delicate for overnight trips for mine.
