Task: make a fire

Author/Instructor: Wentworth

Tools: ignition ie. Firesteel and striker

Materials:
1 Handful of bark
2 handfuls of thin twigs
1 handful of medium size twigs
1 handful of finger size sticks

Purpose: To make a safe fire suitable for boiling water

Skills required: use of firesteel

Results: Your fire can be lit using only natural materials and a firesteel

Time needed: 15 minutes

Clear an area 1.5 to 2m for the fire.

Build a platform of small dead sticks to keep the tinder from absorbing moisture during firelighting. This can be one or two layers.

Tinder Preparation:
  • Take a handfull of dry bark (Stringybark is used in the photos)
  • Pull the fibres apart until they begin to look like string
  • Roll the bark between both hands while pulling the fibres apart until a "birds nest" is formed.

Kindling Preparation:

  • Collect two handfuls of very thin dry twigs.
  • Collect a handful of medium sized twigs
  • Collect a handful of finger sized sticks

Lighting the Tinder: if using a firesteel:
  • Hold the striker in your dominant hand (the spine of a knife is used in the photos)
  • Hold the firesteel in your non dominant hand
  • Keep the dominant arm straight
  • Pull the firesteel away from the tinder, casting a shower of sparks into it.

Lie the two handfuls of thin twigs on the tinder, forming an X

Place the medium twigs onto the pile forming a tipi shape. Gradually add the larger sticks

Once the fire has burned down, collect the ash and burnt sticks into a small pile and pour water over it, mixing it well with a stick to make sure all the embers are dead

Once it is cool enough to touch with an open hand, it can be spread out or dispersed and leaf litter can be scraped back over the fire spot
