Greatbloke and I thought we’d go for a day walk to “Lysterfield and Churchill National Park” on
Friday 29th March 2013 - That’s Good Friday, a public holiday for most of us.

If you’d like to come along, you’d be most welcome, just drop a note in the thread so we know to look out for you.

The park is situated in Melbourne’s East, sandwiched between Dandenong and Ferntree Gully.

Here’s the Google map reference
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=-37°57'5.44,145°15'5.16

The park opens at 10:30 and closes at 4:00, so we thought we’d meet at about 10:15am at the
Churchill Visitor Area (near the corner of Power Road and Army Track)

See Parkweb for details and a map:
http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/315693/Park-note-Lysterfield-Park-and-Churchill-NP.pdf

More Information:
http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/lysterfield-park
(No solid fuel fires are permitted, all plants and animals in the park are protected)

There is a 6.5Km (return) walk up to Trig Point, for 360 views of Melbourne which we thought would be good to do, but there are many km of walks throughout the park.

We’ll stop somewhere along the way for lunch, so bring your own food, water and suitable clothes for the day. If we find something interesting as we go, we can have a good look at it.

We hope to see you there, just drop a note ....

Bump !

... and I picked up some lantana the other day, which I'll bring along.

The bush was a bit straggly, but we'll see what we can do !

For anyone as yet undecided on joining us, this place is pretty easy to get to from most parts of Melbourne, given that it's near the Monash freeway and East Link.

My 25 year old daughter and son in Law will be joining us Aussie123. This Friday,. time flies!

What a great day we had, the weather held off for us and it was a pleasure to meet Aussie123 and his family. Aussie123 had plenty of plant knowledge to share with us. We tasted some bush tucker including bullrush tubers, rosehips and lomandra. We walked to a great view of Melbourne at the top of a hill for lunch, near where the 2006 Commonwealth games mountain biking was held.

We put in a big team effort with the friction fire using Black Boy spears -Xanthorrhoea- that I brought with me, and lantana that Aussie123 brought. The air was a little damp but we managed to get smoke with both the timbers and methods that we tried. IE. bow drill, hand drill, fire plow, and hand drill with thumb string proved to be the winner using the Lantana. Video to come, and maybe some photos.

Aussie123 set up this hand drill using his Lantana and warmend it up to smoking point before tag teaming with my son in law Tim to produce ember and flame...although I didn't catch the flame as well as I would have liked on the video.

It was a great day and a nice area for a walk. I enjoyed meeting GB and sharing some knowledge and experiences. I’d like keen to do another walk some time.

I took a few pics which I’ll upload later (no time now).

Thanks GB for the vid, its nice to see the fire in action !
