CHANGE OF TRIP

Due to commitments, we’ve decided to change this to a daytrip on Sunday 3 March 2013.
We are all busy and in the end the timing just isn't quite right for anyone.

Bugman and I are determined to get away for a few hours, so we’ll meet up early on Sunday morning and have a good bushcrafting poke around the forest.

It you are able to come along, just let me know.

Keep a lookout in this forum, I’m sure there will be other Vic Meets coming up soon :sorrriso:

Regards

Aussie123

The Original Post:
Hi,

The first Vic Bushcraft Meet is coming up in less than a month

Everyone is welcome to come along and share the experience, just drop a note in this thread.
This a family weekend and my family are keen to come along.

(There is more discussion and some pictures here http://bushcraftoz.com/forums/showthread.php?4123-Vic-Bushcraft-meet-up/page5)

When :

The weekend 2 and 3 March 2013

I will probably go to the site on Friday evening, and "reserve" the area, please feel free to come on Friday if you like.
However this is a public camping area, so other people may also be around.

(FYI - Labour day is the following week - Monday 11 March 2013)

Location :

Hunts Bridge camping area (East of Lal Lal, Victoria).

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=-37.710196,144.09595

To get to Hunt’s Bridge :
• travel along the Western Highway
• take the turnoff to Gordon (Hunts Bridge is 18km from here)
• turn left in Gordon (at the main street)
• right turn after a few hundred meters onto the Gordon-Egerton Rd (to Egerton)
• Go through Egerton
• turn left on the Egerton-Ballark Rd
• Pass through Bungal
• Turn right at Elaine Egerton Rd
• The bridge is 1.7km from this point
• The camp area is on the far side of the bridge
• There is an upper and a lower section to the camp area, I suggest the lower area would be best.

Hunts Bridge is easily car accessible and the roads are bitumen all the way.
Fires are allowed and there is good access to the Moorabool River
Beware of kangaroos especially in the evenings.

Facilities :

There are no facilities (ie no toilets, showers or treated water)
This is public area, and there is NO cost
There is a picnic table, but it may be just as well to bring a table and chair if you would like one.

We will be able to have a campfire (restrictions permitting)
There is not much wood around the camp area, so we may need to go for a short drive and pick some up

What to Bring ?

BYO everything you need for the trip including : food, water and camping gear.

Try and bring some bushcraft things or skills which you would like to show off or share, but its not essential.

Agenda :

We don’t have an agenda or a start and end time. You can come and go as you please.

If we all try and bring a few bushcraft items along, we can have a chat and see how things evolve, if everyone does that, I’m sure we’ll fill up the time.

In the previous posts we’ve mentioned :
• bushtucker
• fire lighting
• trading and
• hafting

its nice to have a few ideas and interests on the table, but we don’t have to be formal about it.

What now ?

If you are interested in coming along, drop a note on the thread .
If there is something you’d like to bring, see or do, let us know, it may inspire others
Any ideas – let us know, all suggestions are welcome
Any questions – ask (or PM me).

I hope to see you soon !

I really recomend you all get along to this, Just treat it as a night out in the scrub with mates. I have been to every NSW one and every time met new great people.
So just make the effort and get along, you will have a great time.

Great stuff on organising this Aussie!

Looks like it will be a ripper. I echo Darren's comments. All the meets have been fantastic. Just great to get out and have a yarn with like minded people.

I would like to try and make this but im already driving down to vic for the F1 GP in march so two trips in one month might be stretching it a bit.

Where are all the Victorian members? Surely it cannot be only a couple of you?
Its 1 week to go guys!

I would have go to the meet if I have not had a prior plan to go hunting.

The trip details have been updated, we will NOT be camping 2nd and 3rd March, we'll do a day trip instead :)

See the OP (original post) for details.

Bugman and I met up, starting early in the morning of a beautiful, sunny day.

Last weekend we had the first BCOz Vic Meet which was at Lal Lal (near Ballarat)
P1290095 (Small).jpg P1290097 (Small).jpg P1290100 (Small).jpg

For breakfast we cooked up bacon and eggs and a pot of coffee.
P1290112 (Small).jpg P1290113 (Small).jpg

While the cooking was underway we did a bit of show and tell of various bits of gear which we’d bought along.
We also collected acacia seeds, with the intention of making damper.
P1290101 (Small).jpg

The seed pods were easy to pull from the trees, rubbing them between our hands, they quickly released their seeds. Then a fair bit of sifting and picking was required to remove the debris.
I think that with a larger volume of seed, the separation process is actually a bit easier, since the debris can be sifted and will sit above, or below the seeds. None the less, we managed.
P1290103 (Small).jpg P1290104 (Small).jpg

I bought a mortar and pestle from home to grind the seeds. No joy.
P1290105 (Small).jpg

The fresh seeds were impossible to grind with this setup, so we toasted them. Then we could grind them.
P1290106 (Small).jpg P1290107 (Small).jpg P1290108 (Small).jpg

We mixed 50/50 with SR flour and cooked on the gas.
P1290114 (Small).jpg

The damper was very nice and somewhat nutty, but quite “dry”. Some butter was an excellent improvement.
P1290115 (Small).jpg P1290116 (Small).jpg

Around the area, Bugman pointed out various plants, including peppermint gums. Crush a few leaves to really clear out your sinuse:

And we found some tufts of rabbit fur too, but no other remains or signs:

Fire was our next objective, so we located some Xanthorrhoea (grass trees). We were a bit hard pressed to find many quality flower spikes.
The pieces we located were quite short, a little damp (from rain earlier in the week), and a little rotten.
P1290119 (Small).jpg P1290121 (Small).jpg

Rotten centre:
P1290138 (Small).jpg P1290123 (Small).jpg

There were some resin blobs on this stem:
P1290122 (Small).jpg

Trying a hand-drill, we did succeed in generating a fair bit of heat and could “smell” smoke, but fire eluded us. I think that the drill we were using was a bit short, but its all we could find !
P1290131 (Small).jpgP1290134 (Small).jpg

Not wanting to admit defeat, we thought we’d switch to a bow-drill. Now we had even more problems ! The nylon bow-string slipped constantly on the drill, so we were not able to get a proper backwards-forwards motion. (Yes, we did play with the tension !)
Feeling a bit annoyed we switched the string, but we had the same issue. I’ve not experienced slipping like this before ! (The second pic here shows some "crush" damage to the drill, obviously a rotten section inside) :
P1290135 (Small).jpg P1290137 (Small).jpg

At this point we ran out of time. Fire had eluded us ! I hung onto the setup to have another go at it, but haven’t had a chance as yet.
Has anyone else had problems with lack of friction ?

Bugman certainly lived up to his name, its a small thing, but he pointed out several small spiders (the likes of which I have often seen).
I had assumed they were “just small spiders” but they were in fact juvenile huntsmen. (Sorry, no pics).
Small things sometimes come as revelations – at least to me.

I’d like to say thanks to Bugman for a very enjoyable time spent in the forest, and Mrs Aussie (who came along too).

Time to start top plan the next BCOz Vic Meet .... but that’s another thread ....
