Task: Make a simple cooking crane

Author/Instructor: Wentworth

Tools: knife

Materials:
1 long straight stick 1.2 - 1.5m long,
1 "Y" stick approx 45 cm,
2 short sticks about 15 - 20cm
When you select the long stick, remember that it must be stiff enough to support the weight of a full billy.

Purpose: To use specific knife grips to build a crane

Skills required: forehand grip and chest lever grip.

For an explanation of these grips, see the following link:
http://bushcraftoz.com/forums/showthread.php?5736-Project-Knifecraft

Results: Your completed crane should be stable and capable of supporting a billy on a fire

Time needed: 5 minutes

Find a stick 1.2 to 1.5m foot long, a "Y" shaped stick 45cm long and two sticks 15 to 20cm long.

Optional: When the longest stick is placed on a diagonal, resting on the "Y" stick, determine which way it naturally wants to sit. Cut a notch into the other end of the longest stick using the chest lever grip

Determine the height of your billy by the position of the longest stick

Once you have the desired height, push the sharpened end of the longest stick into the ground

Push the shortest sticks into the ground at a diagonal, each locking the long stick into position.
Optional: for extra security, a rock can be placed over the end to anchor it down
