Hey all.

I have a fairly good supply of railway spikes (I'm a shunter) and I'm willing to collect and trade/sell for a good price. Small ones are worth about 5 bucks each, I get the bigguns.

Make an offer, I can get as many as you want.

Cheers

Nice - heh missed this one. I have been after some for ages, but now a friend can get heaps at no cost to me.

Some people make blades out of them, the knife in the pic might be one.

Another cheap source of nice carbon steel is spring tynes from some types of tractor pulled cultivator. If you are travelling through a farming community, drop by the machinery saleyards. Some old cultivator tynes break up the top and they may have some they are willing to part with for little cash. About 1 inch to 1.5 inch square and up to two feet long. Might make a decent parang or kukri.

I've got a short length mate but I can tell you it is a weighty bugger.

where abouts do you live?

p.s I am moving interstate in a week so may not be able to help right now, but I'm staying in the Rail industry so maybe when they do maintenance I can get some there?

You can usually get steel rails at places like one steel and orcon. Short lengths of rail are used in making cattle grids. I'd hate to post one.

Ugh, didn't read your location until now..
My bad.. I thought I could just drive up and get it, but not cross the continent to WA.

Ok.. got to find a new strategy.

I'm moving to Tasmania in two weeks, and staying in rail, I might be able to locate a cast off length after a look and ask, then it's just a matter of getting to the mainland

Thanks Corin, actually I have reconsidered.

I was looking to make an anvil, but now I found a good substitute.

Today, I "found" in my stash, a piece of tool steel Injection Molding die, a hardened D2 I believe.
It is about 50mm thick, 200mm wide and 300mm long.
It got holes within (for cooling water) but it is still plenty solid.
Dont know why I forget about this piece, I was originally wanting to cut it to pieces for my machining material, lucky I didnt.
It will make a good strong and hard anvil for some steel shaping.

Anyhow, I am good for now :) I really appreciate the thought!
I may one day go for a piece if I have something worthwhile to make.
