The continent of Australia is on the move and experts at Geoscience Australia are trying to keep up.
Key points:

Scientists to recalculate nation's coordinates
Framework last updated in 1994
Australia sits on the fastest moving continental tectonic plate in the world

A team of scientists is about to recalculate the nation's latitude and longitude coordinates, which are currently out by more than 1.5 metres.

It will improve the accuracy of all spatial information across the nation for a myriad of services including transportation, personal navigation and surveying.

FYI in Australia a new national spatial reference system was released in 2017. The current datum we use (mainly) is GDA94 (geocentric datum of Australia 1994). As can be imagined the datum has changed slightly over the past 23 years (which for survey work can be quite significant, hence a new system has been developed and slowly is being rolled out (GDA2020). Most government organisations and spatial providers are looking at how to implement this new datum into their systems, so a work in progress at the moment.
