A walk through the mounatin ash rain forests near Melbourne

Fallen tree (killed by fires in 2009). Note the inner bark falling out of the damaged sapling:

This is the site of a long abandoned town. These foxgloves mark the site of an old cottage garden, long since swallowed by the bush and fires:

I picked up a dry stick along the way and started carving a small spatula.
After a bit of effort I realised the core was very pithy so I abandoned this piece and started again.
See the core of pith (the dark brown "line" at the top, and below the step) :

I split thge stick down the center line to reveal the pith. Then I was able to avoid it.
Still some more work to go, but I ended up with a nice little flipper.
I used a Mora carving knife and GB carving hatchet too:
