Scientific name: Oxyura australis

Common Name: Blue-billed Duck

Order: Anseriformes

Family: Anatidae

Other Names: Blue Bill, Stiff Tail, Spinetail, Little Musk Duck.

Distribution: South-west and South-east Australia including Tasmania.

Habitat: Large, deep freshwater lakes and dams.

Field Notes: Male; light blue bill, chestnut plumage, dark head and upper neck, orange-brown / white on centre of belly, dark tail with pointed feather tips. Female; brown bill, darker plumage than male, black upper tail, speckled black chin and throat.
