Common Name: Black-shouldered Kite

Scientific Name: Elanus axillaris

Family: Accipitridae

Order: Falconiformes

Other Names: Recent name change to have own species. Used to be Elanus scriptus (Letter-winged kite).

Distribution: Throughout mainland Australia.

Habitat: Treed grasslands, on farms, along roads, and in vacant waste lands of urban and coastal areas.

Field Notes: Distinguishing features: Black patch from lores above and behind eye forms (brow). Body white with grey wings, prominent black shoulders, underwings white, black carpel spot and dark tips. Size: 35 cm.
Note: the black markings on eyes is the distinguishing features between this species and the letter winged kite.

Did not actually look for one, Was surprised by the second birds arrival. Will take a look tomorrow now we know the pair are present.

Conception to fledging time lapse study?If you can find the nest and you get good viewing angles. This bird photography can become addictive.

Too late already is . I have whiplash to prove it when Dusty spots something at 100Km/hr and slams on brakes with no care what is behind us:)

Beautiful pics JKM with fantastic blue sky. Such a contrast to our photos.
This one was a poser just outside Kilcoy, March 2012. Had blue sky on the day needed to do justice to feather colouration.
