Scientific name: Tadorna tadornoides

Common Name: Australian Shelduck

Order: Anseriformes

Family: Anatidae

Other Names: N/A

Distribution: South West, Central & South East Australia including Tasmania.

Habitat: Usually found around or close to fresh water, farm dams, lakes etc

Field Notes: Male; black head and neck, white neck ring, black upper parts, dark brown under parts with a cinnamon coloured breast, white shoulder patch.

If you wish to distiguish between the male and female, note the following - the female has the white eyering and white stripe at the base of the bill. This is one of the few occasions in the Aves when the female is more richly decorated than the male.
