Hi Everyone,

Back in 2009 the first Australian Blade Symposium was held in Australia. 40 Makers came and shared their knowledge demonstrated their skills and had a fantastic weekend.

Well in 2015 it is back.

With your support we will make it a reality.

Organized by: The Knife Art Association, the folks that brought you the International Cutlers Expo. Not for profit, all proceeds go to running more great knife related events.

When: 14-15 March 2015

Where: Tahmoor NSW, about 1.5 hours south west of Sydney.

What: A weekend of classroom style instruction in many of the finer skills of the arts of blade making, finishing and sharpening, delivered by some of Australia's best knifemakers.

Accommodation: On site camping.

Sessions: 6 x 2 hour sessions over 2 days

Cost: $300 including BBQ Lunches, Spit roast Dinner Saturday night, and Breakfast Sunday morning also all instruction and site camping.

Application form can be downloaded here:

http://gameco.com.au/wp-content/files/KAA-Blade-Symposium-Application-form..doc

Demonstrators we have penciled in so far include Master Smith Shawn McIntyre, Journeyman Smiths Keith Fludder and Bruce Barnett, and the Australian Knifemakers guild's Wayne Saunders, Karim Haddad and Alistair Philips and from our supporters, Tandy Leather, skilled leather worker Rob Moreton will be covering basic and advanced leather working.

This is NOT a hands on weekend. It is about seeing some of the countries best knifemakers and learning how they process their work. There will be live action demos, and the opportunity to ask questions. Class size is strictly limited to 35 so first in with their forms paid if we hit max numbers will be taken only.

All proceeds, if any, from this event go towards more knife related events and shows. The Knife Art Association is strictly not for profit, and devoted only to promoting the art of knifemaking, custom knives and edged tools.

Had a great weekend, thank you to all involved!

Wayne from Iron Lord Forge talking a group through blade forging.
Awesome session with lots of practical tips, hammer usage, stick tang, integrated tang/blade (possibly not the right term?), etc.

The Blade Symposium 2016 forms are available for download.

The pictures are all from previous Australian Blade Symposiums.

This event is held in Tahmoor about an hour south of Sydney on the 5-6 March.

Places at this event WILL sell out. With a completed form we will hold your place at the event until the last week of January when payment in full is required.

For anyone that has never attended a Symposium, it is basically a weekend of theory classes in knife making. Watch some of Australia's best makers demoing and answering your questions.

It does not matter how good you are you are bound to learn something!

Also it is a great opportunity to get involved with our fantastic little community of like minded individuals.
Please make sure you select the topics of most interest on page two of the forms, we use these to make sure you are in the subjects most relevant to you. To those that attended last year, we are looking to try and have about 50% new content at this one so let us know if you have any ideas or topics of interest!

After just 1 week since the release of the Sydney Blade Symposium forms, we are coming up to 50% of places booked. We are sorry to have to limit numbers to this event, however we have little option, if we are to ensure small class sizes and the best possible event for those that attend.
Are you planning on coming? Get your forms in ASAP, because there is likely to be a waiting list by the time applications are supposed to close at the end of January. Forms are required now, payment ASAP and definitely by the last week of January.

If you like knives and cutting tools the Symposium is a must!

Wondering who we have coming, well we can tentatively confirm the following demonstrators (subject to change as numbers and courses are confirmed):

Paul Florence Maker of traditional swords
Shawn McIntyre One of only two ABS master smiths in Australia.
Keith Fludder ABS Journeyman smith, and awesome knife maker
Bruce Barnett ABS Journeyman smith, and awesome knife maker
Bruce Beamish Qualified blacksmith and master of the power hammer
Alistair Phillips Maker of folding knife Awesomeness.
And International Guest from across the ditch, presenting on the business of full time knife making, Steve Wheeler Full-time knifemaker and head cutler for "The Hobbit" Movies

The presentations offered this time will be subject to revision as we work out how we best make use of the talent pool we have put together and the limited time available.

Hey everyone, been a very long time since I was active here. Life has been pretty amazing since the knifemaking thing started. Anyhow I am pleased to say that the Australian Blade Symposium is back bigger than ever in 2017. 20 instructors from around Australia and the world. 24 x 1.5 hour sessions to choose from and held at the most amazing blacksmith workshop in the country.

It is going to be huge and we look forward to seeing you there. http://www.bladesymposium.com/
